Entries sought for St. Patrick’s Parade in St. Charles

The St. Charles Business Alliance is now accepting entries for the St. Charles St. Patrick’s Parade set for 2 p.m. March 9 on Main Street in the city.

The deadline for parade entries is Feb. 9, organizers said.

The St. Charles Business Alliance is encouraging local businesses, community groups and non-profits to take part in the parade.

Those interested in participating in the parade should complete the entry form at www.stcstpatricksparade.com. Entries that are planning on having more than 20 walkers will need to contact the St. Charles Business Alliance at 630-443-3967 or info@stcalliance.org for special permission and guidelines.

Free tax services for seniors in Yorkville

AARP is hosting free income tax preparation services for seniors at Senior Services Associates at 908 Game Farm Road in Yorkville beginning next month.

Appointments will be scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 8 to April 11. Seniors can stop in at the facility in Yorkville and pick up a tax information packet and schedule an appointment during normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Native American history program scheduled for Jan. 27

Chief White Winnebago of the HoChunk nation will present a program on “A Brief History of the Reintroduction of Native Americans into Illinois” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Barbara Belding Lodge at Brewster Creek Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

He will describe the culture and history of his tribal territory and settlements, how his family was relocated to Starved Rock, and the meaning behind tribal names and culture, regalia and tribal artifacts, a news release from the Forest Preserve District of Kane County said.

Native American storytelling, mostly of HoChunk origin, will be woven into Winnebago’s presentation.

This program is sponsored by Illinois Humanities, which is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Winter walk planned in Geneva

The Kane County Forest Preserve District will hold a wintry morning stroll through the Fabyan Forest Preserve in Geneva on Jan. 20.

Along the way, a district guide will discuss the unique history of the Fabyan family and surrounding land, according to a press release about the event.

The walk, which is for those 18 years old and older, will go from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Fabyan Forest Preserve, 1925 Batavia Ave. in Geneva.

Online forums set with 11th District candidates

The League of Women Voters of Naperville will hold two Zoom forums for area residents focusing on candidates seeking their party’s nomination for the 11th District U.S. House seat in the March primary election.

A Zoom session will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, for Republican candidates Jerry Evans, Susan Hathaway-Altman and O. Kent Mercado. The 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, Zoom session will feature Democratic candidates U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, and Qasim Rashid.

Will County Eagle Watch to feature presentations, hikes

The Forest Preserve District of Will County will hold its annual Eagle Watch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon.

There will be eagle-watching, live bird presentations, guided hikes, family crafts and a scavenger hunt. Lil’ Deb’s Mobile Eats food truck will be on site.

Freezing temperatures at the Four Rivers site, where the DuPage, Kankakee and Des Plaines rivers converge to form the Illinois River, is a prime area to spot eagles who head to the open waters to hunt for fish, officials from the forest district said.

Live bird shows by Wisconsin-based Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center will be presented at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., which will also hold a meet-and-greet at 12:30 p.m. for those who would like to see a bald eagle, great horned owl, snowy owl and northern saw-whet owl.

Guided hikes will take place at 11:50 a.m., 12:55 p.m. and 2:20 p.m. Talon Talks will be offered at noon and 2:30 p.m.
