Special use permit approved for car wash on Douglas Road in Oswego

Oswego Village Board members recently approved a special use permit for the operation of a car wash in a vacant car wash facility in Oswego that has not been operational in more than five years.

The site of the Mason Square Car Wash is at 1250 Douglas Road.

A car wash, which requires a special use permit from the village to operate at the site, has not been in business at the property since 2018.

The village zoning code requires a prospective business owner to re-apply if a special use is “abandoned” or “discontinued for a continuous period of one year,” Oswego Village Planner Rachel Riemenschneider said in a report to the Village Board.

The applicant requested to open a car wash business in an existing 3,800-square-foot building already equipped for a car wash with four self-service bays and two automatic drive-through bays. The site includes multiple vacuum stations as well, village officials said.

The applicant proposed to have the facility open 24 hours a day and every day of the week.

The Oswego Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of the special use, and the Village Board recently approved the permit.

The village’s Development Services Department will be required to review and approve of any proposed changes to the exterior of the building, site or signage, village officials said.
