East Dundee recycling holiday lights through Jan. 31

The village of East Dundee is accepting non-working holiday lights for recycling at two locations through Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Lights can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at village hall, 120 Barrington Ave., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday at The Depot, 319 N. River St.

Free tax prep help starts Jan. 25 at Gail Borden library

The Gail Borden Public Library District will provide free tax preparation assistance by appointment from Jan. 25 through April 18 at the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave, Elgin.

Those who qualify for the program can make appointments for time slots between 4 and 8 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturdays, according to the library’s website.

The service is available to people who make less than $60,000, have disabilities and or are limited in their ability to speak English.

U-46 holding two-day event to fill district job openings

School District U-46 is holding a job fair to fill part- and full-time vacancies from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 20, at the U-46 Welcome Center, 1019 E. Chicago St., Elgin.

There are openings for teachers, paraeducators, bus drivers, grounds and maintenance staff, food service workers and other positions. Same-day interviews will be conducted, according to district information.

Chief White Winnebago of the HoChunk nation will lead a program on the history of Native Americans in Illinois on Jan. 27 at the Barbara Belding Lodge at Brewster Creek Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

Native American history program planned for Jan. 27

Chief White Winnebago of the HoChunk nation will present a program on “A Brief History of the Reintroduction of Native Americans into Illinois” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Barbara Belding Lodge at Brewster Creek Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

He will describe the culture and history of his tribal territory and settlements, how his family was relocated to Starved Rock, and the meaning behind tribal names and culture, regalia and tribal artifacts, a news release from the Forest Preserve District of Kane County said.

Native American storytelling, mostly of HoChunk origin, will be woven into Winnegbago’s presentation.

This program is sponsored by Illinois Humanities, which is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
