Super Bowl LVII: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs

After an exciting and somewhat unexpected NFL season, Super Bowl LVII is finally here. While some teams underperformed this season, the Broncos and Rams were both expected to be contenders but both failed to make it to the postseason, the Eagles and Chiefs appeared to be locked in from the start.

The Eagles came out scorching, winning their first seven games before dropping to the Commanders. Despite that loss, they won another five in a row after that and finished with a regular season record of 14-3.

The Chiefs played well the majority of the season, averaging the most points per game of any team in the league. Mahomes was superb, putting up more than 5,200 yards and 40 touchdowns in the regular season.

Coming into the playoffs, both teams were tested by solid opponents with the Eagles squaring off against the Giants and 49ers, wining both games easily, and the Chiefs beating out the Jaguars in the Divisional Round before squeaking by the Bengals in the AFC Conference Championship.

A huge factor in this one will be the Mahomes ankle injury. He sustained a high ankle sprain against the Jaguars but continued to play, and played well.

He’s obviously a very mobile quarterback so an ankle injury like that has the potential to slow down his game dramatically.

The Eagles have been one of the most impressive defensive teams this year, allowing the second fewest total yards and the fewest passing yards of any team. They also had the fifth highest takeaways during the regular season as they were able to shut down receivers on the edge and force quarterbacks into bad decisions.

The crux of the Philly defense, though, was the defensive line and the pressure on the passer. The Eagles recorded an astounding 68 sacks during the regular season, finding a way to pressure quarterbacks in virtually every defensive set.

The Philly offense is nothing to scoff at either as they put up the third highest total yards and points on average. Jalen Hurts has been excellent, putting up over 3,700 yards passing and 760 yards rushing with 22 scores through the air and 13 on the ground.

He’s proved that he is an effective mobile passer and a threat with his arm or his legs.

The line movement on this one has been interesting.

The Chiefs opened as two point favorites before the line moved in favor of the Eagles. At the time of this writing, Philly is a one and a half point favorite with the O/U at 50.5.

That total seems a bit high. Despite how good these offenses were in the regular season, the Super Bowl is an entirely different animal.

Look for an under bet here as both defenses will be locked in.

For player props, look for Travis Kelce and Dallas Goedert to each put up some solid numbers and a score a piece. Hurts and Mahomes have been relying on the big guys in critical situations and this game is no different.

Overall, back the Birds here as the injury will hamper Mahomes in the pocket and the Philly defense will keep him from getting comfortable.

Types of Super Bowl bets:

Moneyline

Spreads

Spread bets are very common among football bettors, as NFL games are easier to predict that other major sports like the NBA or even the MLB. A spread wager is a bet on the amount of points between the two teams, betting on a team to cover the spread doesn’t mean the bettor thinks that team will win but rather that they will win or lose by more than the expected amount by sportsbooks.

For example, in Super Bowl LVII the spread is -1.5 in favor of the Eagles. A bet on the Chiefs to cover means that a bettor is wagering that the Chiefs will lose by one point. Conversely, a wager on the Eagles to cover the spread means the bettor is putting money on the Eagles to win by more at least two points.

Given how narrow the spread is in the big game and how evenly matched both teams are, a wager of this nature doesn’t make much sense unless bettors are very confident in the Eagles.

Totals

A totals bet, sometimes referred to as an over/under bet, is a wager on the total amount of points scored in a game. Rather than a wager on the difference between each team’s points or the outcome in general, a totals bet is wager on the complete number of points scored by both teams.

Totals bets are very common in football betting because the score is relatively uniform and often predictable.

Traditionally, totals bets were exclusively on the outcome of the game, but with innovations in sports betting you can bet on yards totals, touchdowns scored and more. These type of totals are somewhat similar to player props but presented as simple over/under bets.

Parlays

Where a moneyline, spread or totals bet focusing on the outcome of the game, or the game in general, a prop bet focuses on the statistics of a specific player.

For example, in the big game, a common prop bet focuses on how many yards Patrick Mahomes will run for. Since his ankle injury he’s naturally been less mobile, so the yard total for a potential player prop on Mahomes is set low.

Another potential player prop for Super Bowl LVII may be on Travis Kelce catching at least one touchdown. There are dozens of different player props offered for every game and this one is no different in that respect.

Futures

Futures are much more common at the start of the season. Bettors can place future bets on virtually any event.

Essentially a future bet is a wager on the outcome of an event that will be determined later, often at the end of the season.

It can be on a team to win their division, the conference championship or the Super Bowl. It could also be on a specific player to win the MVP or pass for the most yards that season.
